What is UTR?

The Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) is a unique tax identification number created for Corporate Tax purposes in the United Kingdom. Once you receive this number, commonly known as UTR, from the United Kingdom's Revenue and Customs (HMRC), if you actively engage in trade, HMRC will request UTR activation for Corporate Tax.

While in Turkey, there is typically a single tax identification number, the United Kingdom has two tax numbers. One of them is the UTR, created for Corporate Tax, and it is sent to the registered address of the company as soon as it is established. This tax number is generated for every company upon its establishment. Since there is no corporate tax exemption in the UK, every company is assigned a UTR code.

The second tax number is the Value Added Tax (VAT) number, created for Value Added Tax purposes and commonly referred to as VAT. This number exists for companies registered for VAT, and companies exempt from VAT do not have a VAT number.
